A compact substation, also known as a packaged substation or simply a "box-type substation," is a compact, complete set of power distribution equipment that integrates high-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, low-voltage switchgear, energy metering devices, and reactive power compensation equipment into one or several enclosures according to a specific wiring scheme.
You can think of it as a pre-assembled, modular, and mobile substation. It performs all the functions of a traditional civil-construction substation, from receiving high-voltage power and transforming voltage to distributing low-voltage power.
A standard compact substation typically consists of three main "compartments" or functional units:
1. High-Voltage Compartment (HV Unit)
Function: Receives high-voltage electricity from the grid (typically 10kV or 35kV).
Main Equipment: High-voltage load break switch, high-voltage fuse, surge arrester, live-line indicator, etc. Users can perform switching operations on the high-voltage side here.
2. Transformer Compartment
Function: This is the "heart" of the compact substation, responsible for transforming voltage, reducing high voltage to usable low voltage (e.g., 400V/230V).
Main Equipment: Distribution transformer. Common types include oil-immersed transformers (e.g., S11, S13) and dry-type transformers (e.g., SCB10, SCB14). The latter is more widely used in urban and indoor applications due to higher fire safety.
3. Low-Voltage Compartment (LV Unit)
Function: Distributes the transformed low-voltage electricity to various users or electrical equipment.
Main Equipment: Low-voltage circuit breakers (main and branch), metering devices (electricity meters), capacitor compensation cabinets (for improving power factor), intelligent monitoring units, etc. This is the core of power distribution and management.
Additional Parts:
Enclosure: Usually made of metal (e.g., steel plate, aluminum alloy) or non-metal materials (e.g., glass fiber reinforced cement panels, composite materials), providing functions like wind resistance, rainproofing, dustproofing, rust resistance, anti-theft, and thermal insulation.
Foundation: The compact substation needs to be installed on a raised concrete foundation to prevent internal equipment from being flooded.
1. Small Footprint: Compared to traditional civil-construction substations, compact substations have a compact structure, significantly saving land resources. They are particularly suitable for land-scarce areas like cities and development zones.
2. Short Construction Cycle: Compact substations are designed, manufactured, assembled, and tested in the factory. On-site, only foundation construction, lifting and positioning, cable connection, and simple testing are required for commissioning, greatly shortening the construction period.
3. Flexible Configuration: Can be flexibly customized according to users' power requirements and site conditions, including different high-voltage schemes, transformer capacities, and low-voltage outlet circuits.
4. Low Investment Cost: Eliminates extensive civil engineering and installation costs, resulting in lower overall造价 (overall cost).
5. Easy Mobility: If the installation location needs to be changed, the entire unit can be relocated and reused, avoiding resource waste.
6. Aesthetically Pleasing: The enclosure can be aesthetically treated to coordinate with the environment, and can even be designed as landscape substations to blend into surrounding architecture.
Compact substations are extremely versatile, covering almost all scenarios requiring small to medium-capacity power transformation and distribution:
Urban Public Distribution: Power supply for residential communities, streets, parks, and street lights.
Industrial and Mining Enterprises: Serves as a temporary or permanent power supply center for mines, oil fields, construction sites, and factories.
Commercial Centers: Shopping malls, office buildings, hotels (typically used as secondary distribution units).
Infrastructure: Highways, railways, tunnels, airports, ports.
New Energy Sector: Step-up or grid-connection points for photovoltaic power stations and wind farms.
Temporary Power Supply: Temporary power solutions for construction sites and large event venues.
Based on structure and technical approach, compact substations are mainly divided into two categories:
1. European-Style Compact Substation (Kiosk Type)
Features: High-voltage switchgear, transformers, and low-voltage equipment are placed in separate compartments isolated by partitions. Offers high safety and ease of maintenance. This is the most widely used type domestically in China.
Appearance: Resembles a large metal container or small house.
2. American-Style Pad-Mounted Transformer
Features: The transformer, high-voltage load break switch, fuses, and other equipment are immersed in a common oil tank. The structure is very compact, small in size, and low cost.
Disadvantages: Relatively lower power supply reliability. Often requires replacing the entire transformer in case of failure, making maintenance inconvenient. In China, it is mainly used in cost-sensitive applications with lower requirements, such as rural networks and small residential areas.
